Jamie is an English musician and illustrator. The lead singer, guitarist for British alternative rock trio Reuben. In 2013, Lenman began

performing as a solo artist and has gone on to release two albums, Muscle Memory and Devolver. As an illustrator, Lenman worked full-time for The Guardian and frequently contributed to the Doctor Who Magazine.

“When I was asked to contribute to this show I was in the middle of making an album, and one track in particular had more or less taken over my mind. ‘The Pequod Meets The Delight’ is a verbal reading of one of my favourite chapters in Melville’s Moby Dick, and whilst

recording it I had visualised this scene of Ahab’s ship, rolling in the waves, with the storm clouds gathered overhead and the whale

waiting in the darkness beneath.

I decided that this was what I wanted to paint, seen through the

silhouette of the book itself - an expansion of the logogram that

represents the track on the album cover.

Really I’m a graphic designer or at best an illustrator, rather than a painter, so more than anything this is large-scale graphic design

rendered in test-pots and ceiling paint on a square meter of chipboard

(to give it some texture). Although I was thrilled to be asked, I was hesitant about the project at first, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and I hope you enjoy the results. If you wish, you can listen to the finished track from the album below.”
