“I love the richness and buttery texture of oil paints. I strive for a painterly approach which provides a combination of translucent and opaque marks, making my paintings partly impressionist in style: the subject simplified and the colours harmonious. I use a window viewfinder to identify my composition, and will sketch the subject, making colour, tonal and line studies. In this way I am able to move away from realistic interpretations, each step is a move away from the obvious.

My palette consists of: Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre,

Ultramarine, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber and Titanium white, on occasions I may include Phthalo Blue and Burnt Sienna. I’ve enjoyed a number of painting holidays in Newlyn, St Ives, Lewes and Dedham as they have proved invaluable in teaching me different approaches; it is a positive and rewarding

experience painting in company. I’ll always take my art

materials on holiday, when it is an ideal time to paint the coast.

I grew up in Stony Stratford and moved to Wimbledon in my early twenties. I worked for a London council, but later decided to study for a degree in textiles, graduating from Surrey Institute in 1996. We were encouraged to paint in order to influence our colours in the design process. I now paint full time and have a studio in Stony Stratford.”
